damian marley

Jr Gong as he is affectionately known has been honing his skills—not so quietly—for some time. Damian Marley made noise early on with 1996’s Mr Marley, and his major label debut Halfway Tree showcased a unique gift for blending hard-hitting reality rhymes and an uncommonly eclectic musicality; with a classic reggae sensibility at its core and run through with streams of hip-hop, r&b and dancehall, the album resonated with urban tastemakers and won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2001.

From the first listen it is undeniable that Jr Gong detonates his lyrical gifts with force and precision, but it would be a mistake to think the man’s abilities begin and end in the recording booth.

hearher headley

For sublime vocalist Heather Headley, her second studio album, In My Mind, the torrid follow-up to her Grammy nominated debut, This Is Who I Am, is the kind of soulful, sonically charged diary where lessons-learned meet musical purpose accomplished, grabbing the listener at its mesmerizing center of gravity, which just happens to emanate from the one and only Heather herself.

Born in Barataria, Trinidad, she was blessed with two creative, supportive parents, both ministers, who lovingly encouraged her passions. She learned to play the piano at the tender age of 4, competing in talent contests, and later, immersing herself in her Christian upbringing and the soothing sounds of her eclectic culture, becoming musically versed in calypso, soka, and reggae.

musiq

After debuting in 2000 with Aijuswanaseing, and following up with Juslisen and Soulstar, Musiq Soulchild became known for creating some of the supplest R&B of the new millenium, crafting ear-caressing tracks that blended old school soul fervor with new-school hiphop rhythm.

It's that same quiet devotion to his sonic impact as a musician that drives the man to want to re-introduce himself, to setup his return to radio and clubs as a new beginning of sorts, and not take for granted his status in the music industry.

richie

You can comb the incredible statistics surrounding Lionel Richie's amazing career and still miss something. You can factor in the nearly 60 million albums sold, the five Grammy's, twenty-two top ten hits, an Oscar for best song, a golden globe, a treasure chest of People's choice and American Music Awards too numerous to count, and a discography of albums and singles that navigate an emotional landscape that only few writer/performers have ever truly captured - and still not see what may be the key to this incredible musical legacy

After leaving the Commodores, Richie became one of the most successful male solo artists arguably eclipsed only by Michael Jackson and Prince. As his popularity skyrocketed, Richie moved farther away from his R&B origins and concentrated more on adult contemporary balladry.

Such was his stature that he was invited to perform at the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Further in June 2002, he performed in front of UN Secy General Kofi Annan and Bill Clinton at a benefit dinner for HIV/AIDS for the Global Business Council. He is also honored with a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.

k rogers

Kenny Rogers has become such an icon that it’s easy to forget how he got there. The sweetly raspy vocals are instantly identifiable. More importantly, he inhabits each song, making it vivid and tangible. For more than five decades, Rogers has delivered memorable songs, drawing fans among rock, pop, soul and country audiences.

"The Gambler," a story song so vivid it not only delighted country and pop fans, it also became a TV movie. The movie spawned four follow-ups, making it the longest running mini-series franchise on television. Though theoretically a country singer, Rogers dominated the pop charts, consistently finding songs with universal appeal.

keyshia

It has been a long road for Keyshia, but it is her powerful voice, a bell-like instrument whose soaring clarity is topped off with a tantalizing touch of soulful grit, that is carried her through; not to mention the diminutive singer's personal combination of sugar, spice, sass and sex appeal, along with a solid-steel spine.

Keyshia's talent, personality, and faith have won her fans and supporters within the notoriously picky entertainment industry. She convinced then-superstar MC Hammer that he should put her on, and she even got a chance to do some recording with the rap star before she was 12 years old.

Keyshia is passionate about providing inspiration to young girls, and young people in general, who come from troubled backgrounds. The tattoo on her right shoulder - a cross, a heart, and a star - truly reflects her belief that goals can be realized, despite the circumstances.

brian mcknight

The music of Brian McKnight has defined the true meaning of American soul man since 1991. Like his spiritual Motown godfathers, this upstate New York native has a velvety voice and silky style that captures the vibe of vintage soul without being old fashion. Without a doubt, the landscape of soul music has gotten younger, but that fact did not hinder McKnight’s creative process.

After 16 million albums sold since his self-titled debut, it would have been too easy for McKnight to simply follow the R&B template of rote romanticism. But on his new album, the artist in him felt the need to be more revealing. Currently working on a variety of projects, the veteran soul singer could not be happier with the outcome of Ten.

After one decade, six albums, two of them multi-platinum, five #1 hits, and eleven top ten singles world wide, Grammy winning recording artist Shaggy is still on the grind. Making music that celebrates his culture and being an ambassador for Reggae music has always been the driving force in the heart of Jamaica’s only living Diamond-plus selling artist.

In the early 1990’s Shaggy entered the scene with his deep throaty remix of the Ska classic "Oh Carolina", the first major Reggae record to come out of the dancehall underground. Soon after, the steady dub rhythm of the platinum selling "Boombastic" solidified Shaggy as a dancehall hit-maker.
