There is been a recent interview with one of the cast members of the Aladdin and many things came to surface that was both inspiring and astonishing.

While talking to Zach Bencal who plays Babkak, one among the three street-rat friends of Aladdin it was evident how enthusiastic he is for his role and the whole tour.

He said he aimed to do his best because you never know who sitting in the audience is watching you. This tour is his first and he regards it as his big break. Before landing a role in Aladdin, he originally was auditioning for School of Rock. He went quite far but in the end didn’t get to land a role. The bright side to that audition was that someone who came to be Bencal’s associate during that time passed his name for Aladdin’s audition.

According to Bencal, the auditions took months to end and included six diverse callbacks. And that is not at the last time 30 members of the Disney Creative Team setting eyes on the audition, you can say that the judgment was quite intense that day.

The time Bencal was auditioning for Bencal were rough days for him. He would always go for auditions and no matter how far he went he ended up with no role. It was severe that his friends started calling him ‘the callback king’. So then he decided he will do his best no matter what happens he won’t let anything or anyone let him down. With that mentality, he eventually landed the role in Aladdin.

Talking about his role in the show he opened up about how it’s like to be a member of Aladdin friend gang. Babkak, Omar, and Kassim are three friends of Aladdin that is how the Alladin story actually was written. That is how the plan was and Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wrote it that way. They were writing ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin’ at the same time. But after ‘Beauty and the Beast’ & ‘The Little Mermaid’ Howard Ashman unexpectedly passed away. Which put a stop to the show and after that thing got changed a bit the mom was removed from the story and the monkey Abu replaced the three friends. That is apparently why we can see some of the characteristics of three friends in the monkey.

But when it came to the Musical adaptation of the story Alan Menken decided to honor Howard by displaying his version of the story in the musical. To make it more of a memorable event they even included two hit songs with Howard’s original lyrics sung by the three friends.

Talking about how the audience takes this change of the character, Bencal said “I have so many conversations daily where people get really upset about the monkey, but it’s written so well that people get behind this concept right away. Some people have said they forget there was that [earlier] character. These three guys are really fun and we get a lot of wonderful opportunities to make the audience laugh with a slapstick-y ‘Larry, Curly, and Moe’ vibe. Once audiences get behind [the change], people love it.”
